Beyond a Cup of Sugar: Being a Good Neighbor in the Business World

Posted September 18, 2015

We all know the benefits a good neighbor can bring. They lend a helpful hand, keep you informed about the latest news and make you feel good about the place you call home. Have you ever stopped to think about how that translates to business? Everybody wins when you approach leadership with a neighborly point of view. Here are a few simple ways to start heading down that path:

Lay Out the Welcome Mat.
Host an open house or party, and invite nearby companies and community members. Learn more about them to better understand their needs and possible strategic partnerships that could form in the future. Offer guests a tour of the office and fill them in on what you do. It’s an effective way to create new business leads and keep your company top of mind. Often times the best way to garner more business for your company is to first build strong relationships that lead to trusting partnerships. Studies have shown that people perceive person-to-person interactions as more positive — and credible — than digital communication.

Be Social.
A friendly conversation over the backyard fence can be a great thing, and social media is one business-friendly way to implement that ideal. Get your company involved on social media, and stay engaged. Aside from promoting your company, the ability to post thought-provoking articles that get people talking, comment on others’ posts, and interact with followers can be an invaluable addition to your marketing platform. Before you know it, your company’s name is reaching new people without the heavy lifting of traditional marketing.

Value Your Current Neighbors
One of the best ways to develop a strong book of business is to have strong partnerships. Value each of your clients as if they are your marketing platform. Word of mouth is one of the best ways for your business to grow. By working diligently for one client, you are inherently developing a rapport that the client will share with those around them. By developing a network of loyal neighbors and clients, your potential for growth increases in both quantity and quality.
